This year, The Horror Honeys decided to take a pledge, rather that make a resolution there was zero chance of us keeping. Women in Film has launched the 52 Films by Women project, in which you take a pledge to watch just ONE film directed by a woman every week this year. Easy enough right? And since this is The Horror Honeys, we are going to guide through the project, every week this year, with a featured horror film written or directed by a fierce female!
Take the pledge yourself here, and check out our next pick below!
While her resume isn't vast, writer/director Patty Jenkins is about as important as a woman working in film can be at the moment. She may not be the first woman to ever direct a movie based on a comic book (that would be Lexi Alexander for Punisher: War Zone, which we'll cover another week), but she IS the first woman to be handed a $100 million franchise film, in either the DC or Marvel universes. And while we won't see Wonder Woman for a while yet, we will always have her first feature film, Monster as a reminder of what female directors are capable of. Because Monster, based on the life of serial killer Aileen Wuornos, is a a brutal, gritty, violent film, and Charlize Theron never would have won her Oscar without Patty Jenkins' skill as a director and screenwriter. So while Wonder Woman may end up an amazing film, Monster is the one that will always stick with us.
Monster is available via Hulu, iTunes, Amazon Prime, YouTube VOD, Google Play, & DVD
