The Horror Honeys: Honey Buzz ~ Director Gareth Edwards Runs from Godzilla... 2

Honey Buzz ~ Director Gareth Edwards Runs from Godzilla... 2

Pudgy-wudgy fatty pants!
For a guy who had only directed one indie sci-fi film (2010's Monsters), Gareth Edwards has had a busy few years. First, on the strength of Monsters alone, he was tapped to direct the Godzilla reboot in 2014. And while that didn't go as well as anyone had hoped, he was next hired to direct the first Star Wars spin-off film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which, admittedly, looks fairly awesome. Immediately after Rogue One wrapped, Edwards was set to begin production on the sequel to Godzilla, in which Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidorah are slated to show up and (hopefully) ensure that the new Godzilla movie actually features some Godzilla.

But what it won't be featuring is Gareth Edwards.

Here's looking at you... not Godzilla.
Three days after Warner Brothers announced that Godzilla 2 was getting bumped from June 2018 to March 2019, it was announced that Edwards was stepping down as director of the sequel. According to Variety, the decision was related to his desire to spend some time on smaller, non-tentpole films, which would make sense. If you consider the pre-production on Godzilla, and the new release date on Godzilla 2, that could be as much as six years working on blockbuster films under immense pressure. And given the less-than-warm reception the first film received, you can't blame him for wanting to walk away before committing another three years of his life to a multi-million dollar movie.

The slightly more interesting take-away here though, in my mind, is that with the bumped release date, we're now looking at five years between Godzilla movies. There are two possible outcomes with that length of time between films: 1) it might be long enough for people to forget why they were disappointed by the first film or; 2) it might be long enough for people to just not give a shit anymore.

Which side of the coin do you fall on?
