The Horror Honeys: #52FilmsByWomen with The Horror Honeys ~ Week 6!

#52FilmsByWomen with The Horror Honeys ~ Week 6!

This year, The Horror Honeys decided to take a pledge, rather that make a resolution there was zero chance of us keeping. Women in Film has launched the 52 Films by Women project, in which you take a pledge to watch just ONE film directed by a woman every week this year. Easy enough right? And since this is The Horror Honeys, we are going to guide through the project, every week this year, with a featured horror film written or directed by a fierce female!

Take the pledge yourself here, and check out our next pick below!

It takes a special kind of mind to direct an utterly twisted and strangely hilarious film like Ravenous, and English producer and director Antonia Bird was that special kind of genius. Previously, Bird was known for directing the intensely controversial film Priest, a movie that so vexed the Catholic Church, they tried to have the film banned from theatrical distribution all together. Two weeks into the production of Ravenous, a cannibalism film with a surprisingly humorous tone, original director Milcho Manchevski was fired, and actor Robert Carlyle brought in his friend Antonia Bird to finish the movie. What resulted was a horror film that has become a cult classic, largely due to Bird's brilliant directing.

Antonia Bird passed away in 2013, but we will always have her films when we need a reminder of the exceptional creativity and bravery she brought us over the course of her career.
