The Horror Honeys: Friday Favorites ~ Meta Horror Films!

Friday Favorites ~ Meta Horror Films!

meta: (v) (of a creative work) referring to itself or to the conventions of its genre; self-referential.

Many people use the term "meta" without really understanding what it means. A meta film could be one that draws direct attention to cliches popular within the genre (Scream, They Came Together) or it could simply be a fictional film that acknowledges it's a movie by "breaking the fourth wall" (Fight Club, Coffee & Cigarettes). Being meta isn't as easy as winking at the audience and including jokes that only "true fans" will understand, thus making others feel stupid. A quality meta film shows its love for the genre, while also inviting outsiders in, and hoping they enjoy the ride as much as long-time initiates. This week, the Honeys have decided to share their favorite meta horror films. Yes, horror fans might appreciate them more, but anyone can sit down and learn a thing or two from the experience.
