A Revenge Honey Erotic Thriller November Review with Linnie

Sister, Sister (1987)

And so we arrive at the film I will honor with the "most surprisingly successful erotic thriller" award, Bill Condon's Sister, Sister. Combining southern gothic and erotic thriller, Sister, Sister stars two of the most awesome and underrated actors in the world, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Eric Stoltz, flanked by another of the most awesome and underrated actors in the world, Judith Ivey. Sex, secrets, ghosts, murder, swamps, crazy girls... Sister, Sister is one of the best movies you've probably never seen, and I recommend you do so immediately.

The Story: Charlotte (Ivey) and Lucy Bonnard (Jason Leigh) have turned their Louisiana mansion into a bayou bed and breakfast. When senate aid Matt Rutledge comes to stay at the manse, a strange wedge starts to form between the sisters. It seems Lucy can see dead people, and Charlotte is hiding one hell of a secret that effects both of them. Suddenly, horrible things start happening in the house. Is it one of the sisters? A ghost? Or perhaps the house boy Etienne (Benjamin Mouton), whom the girls have known since they were young?

Etienne has a real Fassbender thing going on... I was sold on Etienne.

Sister, Sister is the kind of film you put on, not necessarily expecting much, but then find yourself pleasantly surprised. It's not the kind of movie you can necessarily place temporally, which is one of the best things about southern gothic films. The combination of the two genres is actually quite genius: the sultry, deep-south sensuality of the southern gothic mixed with the dark, frightening sexuality of the erotic thriller, result in a film that is truly exceptional.

Eric Stoltz could light my candle any time...
Fun Erotic Thriller Fact: Sister, Sister was written and directed by Bill Condon. Condon directed Gods & Monsters (YAY!), Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh (YAY!), Kinsey (YAY!), and...
the last two movies in the Twilight franchise.

The performances in Sister, Sister, also work in its favor, with Stoltz and and Jason Leigh really shining. Both had been acting since they were children, so there is a world-weariness in both of their eyes that outpaces their age, and totally suits their roles. But more importantly, the whole cast know how to sell the more ridiculous elements of the genres: the gauzy sex scenes and the epic melodrama are handled with grace and style by a fantastic collection of actors.

Never trust ginger sisters. A good rule of thumb.
Hilarious Erotic Thriller Fact: Sister, Sister was co-written by Joel Cohen. But not THAT Joel Cohen. This is a lesson Bill Murray would learn the hard way almost twenty years later when he thought that one of the Oscar-nominated Cohen brothers had written the Garfield movie. And agreed to be a voice actor in the film because of that.

Sister, Sister is an undeniably lovely movie, with a great twist, a gorgeous setting, and a cast you will love, if you are any kind of erotic thriller aficionado. So find a copy today!

And choose better dinner companions. Eesh.
Throughout Erotic Thriller month, we are going to be working on a far more stringent rating scale than usual. That means that if I REALLY like a film, it will probably get a three star rating. If I love a film, four stars. If I want to take a movie behind the middle school and get it pregnant, that's a five star rating right there. So with that in mind, Sister, Sister gets:

Erotic Thriller Rating: 4 dropped panties out of 5

Sister, Sister is available via Vudu... Sorry, that's it :/
