The Horror Honeys: Angry Honey Buzz ~ Why We Don't Need Jeepers Creepers 3*

Angry Honey Buzz ~ Why We Don't Need Jeepers Creepers 3*

*and not because it's another pointless sequel

News of Jeepers Creepers 3 broke almost two weeks ago, and generally, the Horror Honey policy is to just skip any news related to remakes or sequels. We do this because frankly, all that kind of news does is just piss us off, and we've found its better for our sanity to avoid it all together. But after much soul-searching, we made the decision to comment on the announcement of Jeepers Creepers 3. Not because we're excited about another film in the series or because we're pissed about another sequel.

It's because a convicted pedophile and child pornographer is being paid to direct the movie.

The conversation over separating art from artist has been going on for decades. We know that Roman Polanski was convicted of the rape of a minor, but many are still quick to point out he's a genius and his private life has nothing to do with his films. Woody Allen has never been convicted of anything, but as a society, we just know his behavior makes us feel icky (and his personal life has been bleeding into his work from the beginning, if you know where to look). Personally, I embrace the fact that I can't separate art from artist. I can't watch a Roman Polanski film without remembering that he's still hiding from justice for his crimes. And I won't watch a Woody Allen film anymore, as I am now supremely disgusted by his May/December story lines and firmly believe that he did molest his adoptive daughter, Dylan Farrow.

Uh... Something about this shot is deeply unsettling.
So what makes Jeepers Creepers director Victor Salva different? Well, for one, the Jeepers Creepers films were made AFTER he spent fifteen months (of a three year sentence) in prison for "one count of lewd and lascivious conduct, one count of oral sex with a person under 14, and three counts of procuring child pornography." All of those charges are related to a child actor from the set of one of his early films, Clownhouse. Further, Salva isn't making high art. He's making shitty horror films and the fact that a studio is giving him money to continue doing so is repugnant. I also can't help but wonder about the sanity of any parent who would allow their child to work on set with this man. While the Jeepers Creepers films are mostly populated with older teens, Jeepers Creepers 2 featured scenes with a young boy. Did NO ONE on set think twice about that?

Eesh.
The facts are these: some crimes should be forgiven. People make mistakes when they are kids. While I may never forgive Mark Wahlberg for curb-stomping an Asian man, or Rebecca Gayheart for mowing down a little boy with her car, I understand that others may. But child abuse, pedophilia, and rape are not forgivable crimes. We shouldn't gently chuck a man on the shoulder who sexually abused a child and say, "Aww, you messed up buddy. But it's all good now. Here is $50,000 and unfettered access to children. Just don't do it again, okay?"

This is madness of the most frustrating kind, and if you plan on seeing Jeepers Creepers 3, you should think again. You will be showing your support for a pedophile with your hard-earned dollars.
