The Victors Stood Guard Over a Kingdom of Rats...

A Revenge Honey "End of the World" List by Linnie

Humans have eternally been entranced by the possibility of their own demise. From ancient cultures predicting the end of the world based on the rise and fall of the sun to doomsday prophets shouting gibberish on street corners, one could believe the apocalypse was nigh... now. Okay... now. Still there?

Then now.

Oh well, I never said I was good at this sort of thing. But what I am good at is picking fabulous films about the Earth when humanity has gone to pot. I love post-apocalyptic movies, because I truly believe at some point, Mother Earth is going to decide she's fed up with us lousy humans and find a way to rid Herself of us. And who could blame her? As a result of this belief, I greedily gobble up movies about the apocalypse, mostly because they scare the crap out of me. Whether it's disease, famine, war, or natural disasters, apocalyptic films are often the most plausible horror sub-genre because, well...

So to celebrate the highly-anticipated release of Mad Max: Fury Road, I've collected ten of my favorite films about the end of the world. Some are totally realistic, some are a little out there, but one thing is for damn sure...

We had it coming. Boy did we ever. Wow.

Note: These are SOME of my favorites. It's in no way a comprehensive list, and I tried to pick less-obvious films. So if you think I left something off, I probably did.

La Jetée (1962)

"They begin again. The man doesn't die, nor does he go mad. He suffers. They continue."

A Boy and His Dog (1975)

"Lack of respect, wrong attitude, failure to obey authority."

Tank Girl (1995)

"Listen up, cause I'm only telling you this once. I'm not bedtime story lady, so pay attention. It's 2033. The world is screwed now. You see, a while ago this humongous comet came crashing into the earth. Bam, total devastation. End of the world as we know it. No celebrities, no cable TV, no water. It hasn't rained in 11 years. Now 20 people gotta squeeze inside the same bathtub - so it ain't all bad."

Logan's Run (1976)

"I am more than machine. More than man. More than a fusion of the two. Don't you agree? Wait for the winds. Then my birds sing. And the deep grottos whisper my name. Box... Box... Box..."

Fail-Safe (1964)

"We've got no alternative! This minute the Russians are watching their boards, trying to figure out what we're up to. If we can't convince them it's an accident we're trying to correct by any means, we're going to have something on our hands that nobody bargained for, and only a lunatic wants!"

Melancholia (2011)

"When I say we're alone, we're alone. Life is only on earth, and not for long."

Hardware (1990)

"Used to be okay down here, you know that? Used to be you could walk down here any time. Go out on a Saturday night with just brass knuckles, nothing else. Maybe a piece of wood or something, piece of pipe, you know what I mean? Nowadays, you need a gun, all the time. Fucking bunch of shit what these people are doing to the fucking world."

Delicatessen (1991)

"Nobody is entirely evil: it's that circumstances that make them evil, or they don't know they are doing evil."

The Last Wave (1977)
"Dream is a shadow of something real..."

Black Moon (1975)

Lily: I don't mean to be rude, but you're not very graceful. In my books, unicorns are slim and white.
Unicorn: Ahh, ahh, ahh, ahh. The most beautiful things in the world, are the most useless.
