The Horror Honeys: SXSW Trailer: EX MACHINA

I'm pretty sure that we've been entranced by the idea of EX MACHINA since it was teased a few months ago... a beautiful venture into the nature of AI along the lines of Asimov's I, Robot but with a feminine twist.

Like most portrayals of women in these situations, Ava the AI is beautiful, innocent, otherworldly and mysterious all at the same time. But, she also harbors secrets, and an innate sexuality that makes you pause and ask the question -- is this REAL or programmed? But isn't that what all men worry about anyway?

From this new trailer, I'm actually curious to see if EX MACHINA will turn out to be an outsiders look at the female of the species - because that seems to be the angle/feeling/theme that is pushed in the trailer.

The cinematography looks stunning and the CGI work is beautiful. I'm looking forward to loving EX MACHINA, except for that teeny tiny lingering fear that it will dissolve into a battle of the sexes in a sci-fi setting.

*please don't let that happen*

The story: Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company's brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac).

Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test—charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan’s latest experiment in artificial intelligence. That experiment is Ava (Alicia Vikander), a breathtaking A.I. whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated––and more deceptive––than the two men could have imagined.

EX MACHINA will debut at SXSW on March 14th, and will get a limited theatrical release on April 10th 2015.
