The Horror Honeys: Murder Monday Jam ~ 'Pistol (A. Cunanan, Miami, FL. 1996)'

Murder Monday Jam ~ 'Pistol (A. Cunanan, Miami, FL. 1996)'

I've got my pistol in the car, uh huh
I've got my stereo in the car, uh huh
I've got my room key in the car, uh huh
Why don't you come to my room
And clean my pistol no duh
I maximize my only liaisons
I'm gonna take it till the taking comes on

In 1996, one of the most creative minds in the fashion world was murdered for the most senseless reason imaginable: none at all. After taking his morning walk, designer Gianni Versace was gunned down on the steps of his Miami home by spree-killer Andrew Cunanan. Versace was Cunanan's fifth and last victim, as the murderer would take his own life eight days later on a houseboat in Miami. Despite an extensive investigation, no motive could ever be found for Cunanan's killing spree; he simply killed people at random as he drove from Minnesota to Miami.

On their newest album, Modest Mouse included a song called, "Pistol (A. Cunanan, Miami, FL. 1996)" that so eerily seems to reflect what could easily be a killer's state of mind in his final days. The song is manic and overly-upbeat given the dark content embedded in the lyrics. The song will make you cringe, but you won't be able to stop listening to it. Which is what the best murder ballads have always done.

Because the album is so new, and Modest Mouse is at their best live anyway, your Honey Jam this week comes via a sneaky sneaky live recording from the Starland Ballroom last August. But go ahead and check out Strangers to Ourselves anyway. It's a return to the sound that got the band started and is pretty fucking fabulous. ~RH
