Saturday Morning Horror Cartoon ~ 'Bimbo's Initiation'

In 1931, animators The Fleischer Brothers were actively trying to beat Walt Disney at his own game, releasing cartoons featuring the likes of Betty Boop, Popeye, and Superman. Their answer to Mickey Mouse? A cartoon dog-creature named... Bimbo. We'll let that settle for second.

Okay, moving on. Their 1931 cartoon, Bimbo's Initiation, is potentially one of the most awful things I've ever seen in my life. It's basically like Saw in cartoon form. But more terrifying. So join us down the manhole for the horrifying journey that is Bimbo's Initiation.

Mickey! You dick!
The cartoon starts out with Bimbo (that's never going to get easier) walking down the street, when a familiar face shows up and removes a lock from a manhole cover, sending Bimbo careening down into the sewers. It is there that he meets a group of strange men, with candle heads and black face, all of which seems offensive in a way I can't specifically pinpoint. When the men ask Bimbo, "Wanna be a member??" and he turns them down... that's when things get really twisted.

Is that really a difficult choice? What is so confusing, Bimbo?
What follows is Bimbo running through a series of Jigsaw-level torture devices, from a wall made of spikes to a giant knife popping out of the wall and poking Bimbo in the ass.

"Hello, Mr. Bimbo. Are you ready to play a game?"
But don't worry. Everything ends happily, when Bimbo finds a room full of Betty Boop clones and dances the night away. Okay, I lied. It's all terrifying. But it makes a hell of a Saturday Morning Horror Cartoon. So enjoy Bimbo's Initiation, and try not have any nightmares.
