The Horror Honeys: Hardcover Thursday Jam - 'Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)'

Hardcover Thursday Jam - 'Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)'

With your cherry lips and golden curls
You could make grown men gasp when you go walking past
And in your hot pants and high heels
They could not believe that such a body was for real
It seemed like rainbows would appear
Whenever you came near the clouds would disappear
Because you looked just like a girl
Your baby blues would flash and suddenly a spell was cast

How to even begin telling the story of autobiographical novelist, "JT Leroy?" Well, to start, when his memoirs about his life with his mother Sarah were released, Sarah and The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things respectively, critics and fans were both horrified and enamored with the writing prodigy. His childhood spent in Sarah's questionable care was brutal and the public was absolutely aghast that a boy could have experienced such tragedy and lived to tell about it. Except... SPOILER!

There was no JT Leroy.

From Vanity Fair in 2006The literary parlor game of “Who Is J. T. LeRoy?” got its final answer in February: The mysterious boy novelist with the horrifying tales of childhood abuse was the invention of a 40-year-old San Francisco woman.

Yes, right around the time Asia Argento was making her directorial debut with an adaption of The Heart is Deceitful, news was slowly leaking out that JT Leroy was nothing but smoke and mirrors, the creation of a failed novelist who couldn't get published on her own steam. Did the fact that the books were fiction negate their quality? Yeah, a little. But they still went on to inspire musicians and artists, even though they were a lie. Among other works, Garbage released a song based on Sarah in 2010 that retold the story of JT's time spent as a transvestite child prostitute. So on some level, I suppose we can all be grateful the stories were fake. I will rant about how this nonsense drew considerable attention from REAL victims of child abuse and forced prostitution some other time. ~RH
