The Horror Honeys: Revenge Wednesday Jam - 'The Mariner's Revenge Song'

Revenge Wednesday Jam - 'The Mariner's Revenge Song'

Find him, bind him
Tie him to a pole and break
His fingers to splinters
Drag him to a hole until he
Wakes up naked
Clawing at the ceiling
Of his grave
There is one thing I must say to you
As you sail across the sea
Always, your mother will watch over you
As you avenge this wicked deed...

I miss the days when story songs were a common-place part of musical tradition (I say that as if I were alive during such a time. The first cassette tape I bought was Ace of Base. What the fuck do I know?) But Oregon indie band The Decemberists have gone a long way toward making the story song cool again, and despite their popularity with fixie-riding, PBR-swilling, beard-growing hipsters, Godzilla bless the band for that much.

Regardless, out of all of their story songs, The Mariner's Revenge Song is unequivocally my favorite for about a dozen different reasons. First and foremost, it's a revenge story that begins in the belly of a whale. Literally. So settle in and listen to this Decemberists classic as you would a book on tape because it's just as epic and twice as beautiful as pretty much anything you'd find on Audible. ~RH
