A Revenge Honey "Sploosh" Review

Safety Not Guaranteed (2012)

Let me just open this review with some full disclosure: On my Freebie Five List, actor/writer/director Mark Duplass is second only to Nathan Fillion. So yes, I am predisposed to love the crap out of anything that he is a part of. But even if you remove that fact from the equation, Colin Trevorrow's Safety Not Guaranteed is the best sci-fi/romantic comedy ever made. Not that there are a lot of those, but even if there were, this would be the best.

The Plot: Darius (Aubrey Plaza), an intern at a newspaper, gets tapped to come along on an investigative piece with her slightly douchey boss and super-nerdy co-worker. The story? A man has put an ad in the classifieds section looking for a partner to time travel with him. In an effort to find out if it's a joke or the guy is actually a total wacko, the trio track him down and befriend him. But as Darius gets closer to Kenneth (Duplass), she starts to question whether he's crazy or he is actually capable of traveling back in time.

I try not to throw around the word "charming" a lot, but that is exactly what Safety Not Guaranteed is, with an extra dose of non-annoying quirkiness. What makes quirkiness NOT annoying? It's the line between Zooey Deschanel and Aubrey Plaza. While Aubrey Plaza is basically every Horror Honey's spirit animal, Zooey Deschanel is the kind of girl most of us want to smack across the face with a wrench. (sorryreallynotsorry). And this film is Aubrey at her caustic best: totally annoyed and beaten down by life, but desperate to believe in something magical. #horrorhoneyproblems.

Kenneth: To go it alone, or to go with a partner. When you choose a partner, you have to have compromises and sacrifices, but it's the price you pay. Do I want to follow my every whim and desire as I make my way through time and space? Absolutely. But at the end of the day, do I need someone when I'm doubting myself and I'm insecure, and *my* heart's failing me? Do I need someone who, when the heat gets hot, has my back?
Darius: So, do you?
Kenneth: I do.

There are a few unfortunate and unnecessary side plots that take away from the main story, but that doesn't make me love it any less. Safety is about two people who don't really fit in anywhere finding each other and exploring the world together, in a decidedly unusual way. As someone who has no patience for the majority of romantic movies, I found everything about Trevorrow's movie spoke to the reality about falling in love now. It's about baggage, history, pain, and the desire to go back in time to make it all better. But the question is, would you change your past or do you move on from it and learn?

How to charm a Horror Honey 101...

The bottom line is, Safety Not Guaranteed is a romantic comedy for people who love horror, sci-fi, and hate romantic comedies. It's strange, beautiful, and the ending straight up tugs at my heart strings every damn time. So if you haven't seen this awesome little nugget, get out there and do so.

And if you see Mark Duplass... tell him the Revenge Honey would gladly accept a piggy back ride from him. I don't think I mean that sexually.

Revenge Honey Rating: 4 3/4 Triple Threat Time Travelers out of 5
