The Horror Honeys: Murder Monday Jam - 'Jenny Was a Friend of Mine'

Murder Monday Jam - 'Jenny Was a Friend of Mine'

We took a walk that night but it wasn't the same
We had a fight on the promenade out in the rain
She said she loved me but she had somewhere to go
She couldn't scream while I held her close
I swore I'd never let her go
Tell me what you wanna know
There ain't no motive for this crime
Jenny was a friend of mine

This track from The Killers was never actually released as as a single, and yet it remains one of their most popular songs. I think part of the reason for that is because it's so fucking catchy (seriously... It's like a Duran Duran track if the fellas from DD were a little more Mormon). But the story underlying Jenny is so eerie, that I think that accounts for a large part of its sustainability. If you're one of those people who doesn't listen to lyrics, and if you are, we can't be friends, Jenny is told from the perspective of a boy who is held by the police on suspicion of the murder of his lady friend. I would give this song a perfect score if it weren't for one small thing...

It is oddly reminiscent of an 80s song with the exact same plot. Tune in next week to hear the Honey Jam I believe inspired The Killers to write Jenny Was a Friend of Mine, even if it was subconsciously! ~RH
