The Horror Honeys: Hardcover Tuesday Jam - 'King Nothing'

Hardcover Tuesday Jam - 'King Nothing'

Dig for gold
Dig for fame
You dig to make your name
Are you pacified?

All the wants you waste
All the things you've chased

And it all crashes down
And you break your crown
And you point your finger
But there's no one around

Just want one thing
Just to play the king
But the castle crumbled
And you've left with just a name

Where's your crown?
King nothing

As an admittedly hardcore literature nerd in the late 90s I found Shakespeare in everything, especially metal music. In addition to making my parents roll their eyes and question my origins on a pretty constant basis, I also played music like this super loud in the basement at all hours of the night. When I was a teenager, my obsession with Shakespeare's Histories and Tragedies was personified in my love of Macbeth and it still is. For me, Metallica's King Nothing was all about Macbeth - the lost nobleman seeking ever father for something that should never have been his and finding out just how hollow, brutal and cold his victory was - only to have it taken away at the height of his hubris when he least expected it. I still can't listen to this song without itching to plug Polanski's film version of Macbeth into my brain directly afterwards. ~HH
